Vegas intruder wakes Mike Tyson

An intruder who broke into a Las Vegas hotel room had a lucky escape from its sleeping occupant — boxing legend Mike Tyson. The former heavyweight champion was staying at The Cosmopolitan with his family following Stevie Wonder's New Year's Eve concert, when he was awoken by rustling sounds and a flashlight, TMZ reported Thursday. By the time the 45-year-old realized what was happening, his unwanted visitor had left empty-handed. Hotel security was called and is investigating the incident, sources said. A rep for The Cosmopolitan said, "We have received a report of an incident that is currently under investigation. As always, guest safety is of the utmost importance."

Mike Tyson and the final bout of his career

By Jenna J - Iron Mike Tyson, the youngest man to ever claim a portion of the heavyweight championship and a fighter once known as the “baddest man on the planet”, officially retired from boxing June 11, 2005 after a surprising defeat to unheralded Kevin McBride. The fight itself saw the former Champion struggling to land his shots, getting fatigued rather quickly and ultimately fouling his opponent in more ways than one in what was becoming a competitive fight. At the start of the 6th round, Tyson sensing some urgency put forth an attack on McBride in an effort to end the match, but saw this attempt like many of his others on the night ending with the much larger man tying him up. This was the beginning of the end for Tyson, as he let frustrations overtake him and began to foul McBride. First came a warning from Joe Cortez for trying to break McBride's arm in a clinch, and then came a two point deduction for an intentional head butt that left Kevin bleeding from the eye. Undeterred by what was happening in the ring, McBride continued doing what he had done all night and that was simply tying up, leaning on, and hitting Mike with short shots on the inside. At the end of the 6th round, McBride leaned on top of Tyson once again, this time causing Mike to collapse to the canvas where he struggled to get back to his feet. Once back to his corner, his trainer Jeff Fenech decided Mike had enough, and called a halt to the match, leaving the once most feared boxer in the world retiring on his stool.

Kevin Rooney interview: Talkin’ Mike Tyson with Kevin Rooney

Source: boxinginsider.com Author: Scoop Malinowski Date: 1 august 2011

It’s always a pleasure to listen to Kevin Rooney talk about his old charge Mike Tyson, who in his prime years in the 1980′s, was the most exciting, destructive heavyweight force in boxing history. Check this out…

BoxingInsider:  When was Mike at his prime best?

Kevin Rooney:  ”When he beat Michael Spinks. He just wiped him out. Before that he beat Tony Tucker and Tyrell Biggs, the main fighters back then. He wiped out Tony Tucker – he won a 12 round decision, I mean, he kicked his ass. Then he knocked out Tyrell Biggs. He knocked out Larry Holmes. Then he fought Tony Tubbs in Japan – he starched him in two rounds. Then he knocked out Michael Spinks in 90 seconds. 90 seconds. It wasn’t a joke. I mean, he knocked him out. So I think that fighter, in my opinion, could have and should have probably beaten anybody that was in his path. Anybody including Rocky Marciano and Muhammad Ali. Well, I’ll give Muhammad Ali and Rocky – well it could have been different, I mean, Rocky punched like hell. Muhammad punched like hell. Rocky had beat everyone. Muhammad had heart and was hard to hit. The fights would have been interesting. But I believe that Mike would have come out the better. Because he punched very hard [laughs]. Mike…I believe that Mike is one of the hardest punchers in history. He punches harder than Rocky. Punches harder than Joe Louis. Punches harder than George Foreman.”

Tyson, Stallone, Chavez enter Boxing Hall

By JOHN KEKIS
AP Sports Writer

CANASTOTA, N.Y. (AP) -- The once-proclaimed "baddest man on the planet" fumbled for words that wouldn't come. Sylvester Stallone knew exactly what Mike Tyson was feeling.

Both were inducted in the International Boxing Hall of Fame on Sunday, Tyson for his reign as heavyweight champion of the world, Stallone for his "Rocky" movie series, and the fans turned out in droves on a rainy, overcast afternoon.

Thousands packed every corner of the induction grounds, and Tyson was no match for the emotion of the moment.

"I've got to be goofy about this or I'll get emotional up here," Tyson warned before trying to honor the late trainer Cus D'Amato, who became his legal guardian after Tyson's mother died and taught him the finer points of the sweet science in a gym in Catskill, N.Y., just a 2 1/2-hour drive from the Hall of Fame.

D'Amato died in 1985, the year before the hard-punching Tyson knocked out WBC champion Trevor Berbick in the second round to become the youngest heavyweight champ in history at age 20.
